The National Library of Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigerian Library Association Katsina state Chapter on the 25th July 2023 distributed about 2000 volumes of books to primary school pupils in 14 government schools across the state to promote reading culture.

The donation was in redemption of the pledge made by the two organizations during the 2023 library week of NLA Katsina chapter, as their contribution towards the promotion of education and literacy in the state.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the NLA in Katsina state, and University Librarian, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, Prof. Sani Abdu Fari stated that “the unimpressive reading culture was the cause of the problems we have in our society today” and said the books were donated as part of contributions to education and to promote the reading culture of the pupils/students. He applauded the National Library Nigeria for its delivery of library services and the promotion of reading culture across the country. He also commended the Head of Katsina state branch, Mrs Amina Sayyadi Maje for her support and passion towards the growth of librarianship in the state.

Also speaking, the Marafan Katsina, Alhaji Abu Abe, who represented the Emir of Katsina, appreciated the donors and encouraged the pupils/students to make good use of the books donated.

The Head of Katsina State Branch Amina Maje Sayyadi in her closing remarks thanked the NLA and all who contributed to the success of the event. She advised the students to cultivate the habit of visiting the library not just for reading to pass examinations but also to read for pleasure. She encouraged schools to bring their pupils/students to the National Library of Nigeria on excursions to acquaint them with operations and resources available for their use.

Dignitaries who honored the event includes the former University Librarian, Umaru  Musa Yaradua,  Alhaji Naiya, Chief Judge of Katsina state represented by Barr. Danladi Abubakar among others.

Books were given individually to the pupils and their schools including Hausa/English Dictionary to promote indigenous language.
